Cardio before or after training?

I guess it comes down to the individual and their goals. For me, I never do cardio before my workout and thats because I want to gain muscles.

Basically its ok to do a five minute warm up on an exercise machine before you start your workout, but to do an extended aerobics session before hand is almost pointless. You will only end up depleting your energy stores (glycogen), and block GH (growth hormone) release during your workout.

But again it comes down to what you want to achieve, and what sort of physique you want.

Deb, it really depends for me - because the gym is so cold here I will often do cardio before weights as I cannot lift as much as I'd like with "cold" muscles. Though much of the time I separate the two. When I was trying to add more muscle, I cut my cardio dramatically.

I do weights and cardio in the same session usually, and always do weights first... I want muscles too!

Ive also been doing my weights first thing in the morning and then cardio in the afternoons. In the past few weeks that I have been training that way I have already noticed some awesome results with muscle growth!

Hi ya Deb. For me I try to do cardio in the mornings and weights in the nights. If my PT is training me in the mornings then I'll switch.

I agree and understand about doing a session of cardio before weight training. It should be the other way round. With the exception to cardio warm ups.

Anyway, that's my view! Keep up the good work.

Hi Maraina!
What you are doing is splitting you cardio and weight training up. So you are doing it perfectly.
Hugs.

I usually do weight first - for the same reasons as you mentioned. But if I am planning on doing cardio at the gym I can't split it up because I just cant bring it within myself to go to the gym twice in one day! However I don't mind doing split cardio outside!

I love doing my weights first cause i can really pump up those weights and break through barriers.
Although i am lucky cause i have more fat to burn hehe so cardio session are great for my wanting to lean down:)
But i always go heavy in weights and i love every minute of it and thanks to splice i have a made great progress:)
Em:)

well it depends on how much time I have, some days if I can get to the gym twice I split it and do weights cardio and then back for a second cardio, other days i just do weights, or some days I do weights followed by cardio. Never cardio before weights either though

It all depends on your work and lifestyle I guess. Me personally, I prefer to do my weight training first thing in the morning and then cardio in the afternoon. But at the moment I ride to and from work for cardio and my weight training is both mornings and afternoons depending on when I'm instructing students. I think the big thing here is to be flexible so that when change happens you can adapt quickly and without detriment. It's good to shock your system every now and then as I have found of late. :o) xo

I always cardio either separately to weight training or I cardio after weight training.

As for competing messing with our heads, it's because we put so much pressure on ourselves to achieve the best results possible. We don't want to get on that stage with any regrets about whether we could have or should have done better... that is a lot of pressure to handle!! That said, you will learn so much about yourself when you compete... it really helps you to know yourself which is a great thing!! xxx
